There’s some excellent news today for those waiting on the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5. The official blog of iPhone hacker pod2g has issued a progress update that implies that the untethered jailbreak is coming very soon. According to the latest post, coding and testing for the jailbreak has been completed for all iOS devices, except the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and iPhone 4 CDMA version.

IPhone 3Gs 5.0.1 jb worked.

Remaining to test: iPod 4G & iPhone 4 CDMA running 5.0.1.

Also, I’ve tested iPad 1 and it worked.

Now the time to finalize the jailbreak for old devices, fix some stability issues and package the whole. That will take some days.

In the meanwhile, I’m starting the research for iPad 2 and 4S. I’ll take you informed of my progress.

According to pod2g’s Blog.

That means the only thing still left to be done is for pod2g to package the code and decide when to release it. A little bit of testing for some devices is still required, however. Here’s the status update for the untethered jailbreak from his blog, for each device.

  • iPod touch 3G on iOS 5.0.1
  • iPhone 4 (GSM) on iOS 5.0.1
  • iPhone 4 (CDMA) on iOS 5.0.1 (Not Tested Yet)
  • iPad 1 on iOS 5.0.1
  • iPhone 3GS on iOS 5.0.1
  • iPod touch 4G on iOS 5.0.1 (Not Tested Yet)
  • Apple TV on iOS 4.4.3 (Not Tested Yet)
  • iPhone 4S and iPad 2 (Not Tested Yet)

Once final work has been completed for these devices, he will move to jailbreaking the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. If you’re looking to jailbreak now, current jailbreak methods for iOS 5 are limited to tethered jailbreaks using eitherSnowbreezeRedsnow, or Ac1dsnow.  You can, also, add an optional semi-tethered jailbreak which will allow your device to retain much of its functionality in the event you need to reboot or power off.  You will not, however, be able to use jailbreak tweaks until you reboot tethered.  You will, however, be able to use your browser, message, make calls, and use various other services.  When the untethered jailbreak is officially released, you can bet we’ll have it for you.

No More Tethered.
